A tribute was paid to Jorge Fons, who was quite humble and clearly moved during the opening ceremony of the 12th Expresión en Corto short film festival.
“It must be because people like what I've done,” said the understated Mexican film director in response to multiple awards, including the festival's annual career achievement prize, the Silver Cross. “I feel like the most popular guy around here,” he said with respect to the praise heaped on him.
Just before the ceremony, Fons gave a keynote where he talked a little about everything: the situation in the country and of cinema, the laws of film, new director talent, and more, all peppered with anecdotes from his 40 years in the business. He called Salma Hayek “a sweet thing,” and he remembered the passion of Katy Jurado.
Luis Felipe Tovar and Ana Serradilla led the events of the night, while Arcelia Ramírez and Angélica Aragón made the award presentation. And not to be left out, actress María Rojo, who has worked with Jorge Fons on multiple occasions, said a few words in his honor.
