Peter Greenaway in Guanajuato

sábado, agosto 01, 2009

Last night featured a tribute to one of a select group of world cinema geniuses, Peter Greenaway, before an audience that knew his work well.

The tribute was preceded by a short speech and a look back at Greenaway's controversial films presented by Ana Serradilla and Demián Bichir, and was followed by Greenaway's keynote.

Greenaway was awarded the festival's Silver Cross, among other recognitions, which he accepted with an enigmatically inexpressive manner. After the ceremony lasting only about 40 minutes, Greenaway went on with other evening plans while the audience settled in to watch The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, which wound up at about midnight.

After the showing, along with pretty much everyone else, we headed to the city cemetery where, among tombstones and Guanajuato's famed mummies, we got our terror film fix. That was followed by a jaunt downtown to catch some late night festivities, the first being the celebration for the film Todos hemos pecado at main university building in the city center. A lively scene, no doubt, but it wasn't quite enough, and so we headed to the Hotel Camino Real for Vice magazine's anniversary bash, where we mingled with Juan Manuel Bernal, Silvia Navarro and Luis Ernesto Franco on the dance floor, in addition to some other big names.

And so the party goes on at the Expresión en Corto festival. Because between the parties and the movies, we're all having the time of our lives.
